Salma Hayek, born as Salma Valgarma Hayek Jimenez, made history as a pioneering Mexican actress in the American film industry, often credited for breaking barriers in the film industry, being one of the first Latina actresses to establish a fruitful acting career in the United States. Hayek was born in Mexico but went to Catholic school in New Orleans before enrolling in Mexico City’s Universidad Iberoamericana.

She caught the attention of television producers in the capital, who put her in the Mexican daytime soap Teresa. Hayek moved to Los Angeles in 1991, then hoping to find a career in movies. After appearing in a small role in Mi Vida Loca, she was discovered by director Robert Rodriguez, who put her opposite Antonio Banderas in Desperado. This collaboration would later stem to her being cast to another Rodriguez film, the 1996 film From Dusk Till Dawn, starring alongside prominent actor George Clooney and director Quentin Tarantino.
